Brief History

 

BRSC organization was founded in 1975.

1970's  Initial contacts with Rzeszow are made when Chopin Singing Society performs in Rzeszow. Mayor Stanley Makowski asks Commissioner of Parks Gus Franczyk & Ted Mikoll to serve as Co-Chairmen of Buffalo-Rzeszow Sister Cities committee. Agreement of Cooperation is signed by Mayor Makowski and Mayor Bilut on 6/2/75.

Nov. 1990  Mayor James Griffin reactivates Buffalo-Rzeszow Committee. Henri Sumyk named Chairman. Councilman Dave Franczyk initiates Common Council resolution supporting sister cities relationship (adopted).

May  1991  Buffalo-Rzeszow Committee incorporates as not-for-profit corporation. Christopher Skonecki named President. Mark Peszko, Esq. named Vice-President.

Sep. 1991  Mayor of Rzeszow Mieczyslaw Janowski, Deputy Mayor Dionizy Beda & Chairman of City Council Jan Rejman visit Buffalo to take part in Municipal Training Phase I.

Sep. 1991  Judge Michael Pietruszka represents BRSC, Inc. at an International Conference on Municipal Cooperation held in Prague.

Feb. 1992  Dr. Joan Sulewski secures a donation of a rare antibiotic valued at $1,500 from Lilly Co. to help treat a critically ill man in Rzeszow. This was in response to a request from Mayor Janowski.

Mar. 1992  Judge Pietruszka publishes an article about his visit to Rzeszow  in Buffalo Magazine of the Sunday Buffalo News.

Apr. 1992  BRSC, Inc. receives an Outstanding Organization Award from the Polish American Congress Western New York Division.

May  1992  BRSC, Inc. members attend a New York State Sister Cities Conference in Rochester, NY.

Jul. 1992  Mark Peszko, Esq. represents BRSC, Inc. at International Sister Cities Conference in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Aug. 1992  BRSC, Inc. sponsors a Tour of Poland which included a four day visit to Rzeszow.

Aug. 1992      Pietruszka Family sign up pen pals at Buffalo ZOO during Children's Peace Day.

Oct. 1992  BRSC, Inc. holds first annual benefit dance "Zabawa" for the Small Children's Home in Rzeszow.  $500 is sent & used to buy coal for heating the orphanage.

Oct. 1992  Jim Serafin coordinates "Toys for Rzeszow Orphanage" drive. 60 lbs. of toys and clothing are sent to the Orphanage in the Spring of 1993.

Feb. 1993  BRSC, Inc. receives Am-Pol Eagle's "1992 Citizen of the Year" Award in the category of Organizations.

May 1993  Four municipal professionals from Rzeszow spend a month in Buffalo as interns studying Police Services, Buffalo Municipal Housing Authority & Public Works as part of Municipal Training Phase II.  They were: Bogdan Roman, Chief of Rzeszow Police, Maria Rozkowicz, Director of Public Housing, Andrzej Luszczynski, Engineer and Krzysztof Zieba, Engineer.

May 1993  BRSC, Inc. members attend a New York State Sister Cities Conference in Corning, New York.

July 1993  Youth dance group "Estradka Uszatka" from Rzeszow performs during Cultural Festival of the World University Games. They were hosted by Krakowiacy Dancers of WNY & sponsored at Rockwell Hall by BRSC, Inc. with an anonymous donation of $500. Also, Jim Serafin raised $1,000 from Canisius College Permanent Chair of Polish Culture & book sales to help cover the group's expenses.

Oct. 1993  BRSC, Inc. held a second annual benefit dance "Zabawa" for the Small Children's Home in Rzeszow. $1,000 will be used to buy coal for heating the orphanage. Funds were delivered 4/11/94.

Nov. 1993  BRSC, Inc.  coordinated the itinerary of a Trade Mission from Rzeszow Region into Buffalo.  The delegation was headed by Hon. Kazimierz Ferenc, the Voivode and included business leaders from Rzeszow.

Jan. 1994  BRSC, Inc. made contact via an Internet E-Mail connection between Buffalo and Rzeszow.

Apr. 1994  BRSC, Inc. assists in  coordinating a State Conference of Sister Cities in Buffalo.

Jun. 1994  BRSC, Inc. assisted Dr. Arthur Mruczek  and Dr. Klementowski with their ophthalmologic "Eyes on Rzeszow" project to donate services and equipment valued in excess of $250,000 to patients and the medical community in Rzeszow.

Oct. 1994  BRSC, Inc. held a 3rd Annual Benefit Dance for the Small Children's Home in Rzeszow. $900 was delivered to the Small Children’s Home for the heating costs.

Oct. 1994      BRSC, Inc.  assisted WNY Economic Dev Corp & International Trade Council with a matchmaking business delegation to Rzeszow.

Dec. 1994   BRSC, Inc. conducted a Toy Drive for the children in the Small Children’s Home in Rzeszow. The drive, led by George Miecyjak, air freighted $600 worth of individually wrapped toys to the 28 children in time for Christmas.

May 1995    BRSC, Inc. assisted the Buffalo State College Choir with arrangements to perform in Rzeszow.

Oct. 1995   BRSC, Inc. held a 4rd Annual Benefit Dance for the Small Children's Home in Rzeszow. $1,770 was raised and delivered to the Small Children’s Home for the heating costs. Collaborated with the Polish Union of America to send 500 lbs. of donated toys, clothing and supplies to the Home.

June 1996   BRSC, Inc. lead “Eyes on Rzeszow II” Ophthalmologic Mission and trade representatives to Rzeszow. 

Sep. 1996   Dr. Frederic Morin III and Dr. James Cummings of Children’s Hospital in Buffalo are lead speakers at a Neonatology Conference in Rzeszow. Dr. Witold Blaz of Rzeszow coordinates the exchange.                          

Oct. 1996   BRSC, Inc. held a 5th Annual Benefit Fundraiser for the Small Children's Home in Rzeszow. $1,500 was raised and delivered to the Small          Children’s Home for the heating costs. Collaborated with the Polish Union of             America to send 600 lbs. of donated toys, clothing and supplies to the Home.

May 1997 Joe Macielag, President of Polish American Congress, WNY Division visits Rzeszow.

May 1997    Bishop Henry Mansell visits Rzeszow at the invitation of Bishop Kazimierz Gorny and is the main celebrant of the Corpus Christi Mass.

Jun. 1997   Dr. Tarunraj Singh, Professor at UB School of Engineering collaborates with Dr. Andrzej Tomczyk of the Rzeszow Polytechnic University. Dr. Singh delivers a lecture in Rzeszow entitled “Robust Control of Slewing Flexible Structures”.

Oct. 1997   BRSC, Inc. held a 6th Annual Benefit Fundraiser for the Small Children's Home in Rzeszow. $2,700 was raised. Collaborated with the Polish Union of America to send 509 lbs. of donated toys, clothing and supplies to the Home.

Aug. 1998   BRSC., Inc. hosted Senator/Mayor Mieczyslaw Janowski in Buffalo during his visit.  Coordinated official visits with local leaders, business community members, local organizations and friends.               

Sep. 1998    BRSC,  Inc. receives an award from Pulaski Associaton of WNY for cultural contributions to WNY Polonia.

Oct. 1998   BRSC, Inc. held a 7th Annual Benefit Fundraiser for the Small Children's Home in Rzeszow. $3,000 was raised. Collaborated with the Polish Union of America       to send 413 lbs. of donated toys, clothing and supplies to the Home.

Dec. 1999   BRSC, Inc. held a 8th Annual Benefit Fundraiser for the Small Children's Home in Rzeszow. Total of $5000 was raised. Collaborated with the Polish Union of America to send 587 lbs. of donated toys, clothing and supplies to the Home. Collaborated with Polish Student Association at UB who ran a "Wigilia" celebration to raise $1,000 of above total. Funds will be used for construction of a playground at the Children’s Home by June 2000.

Jan. 2000   Established communication with Amazon Club of Rzeszow (Mastectomy Patients’ Support Group) to exchange support and ideas on issues of Mastectomy. Dr. Joan Sulewski secured gifts of breast cancer screening kits and educational materials from corporate/health care donors and they were sent to the Amazon Club of Rzeszow.
